The ideal position is on the ceiling in the middle of the room. It's also recommended to have one in the hallway and on the landing to make sure you can hear an alarm throughout the house.
Don't put alarms in or near your kitchen or bathroom. Smoke or steam can set off smoke alarms by accident. Heat alarms can be used in kitchens instead.
Test your smoke alarms regularly by pressing the button until the alarm sounds. If it doesn't sound, the batteries need replacing.
Smoke alarm beeping regularly? Replace the battery immediately.
Ten year alarm?? The whole alarm needs replacing after 10 years.
You should also consider other fire safety equipment such as fire blankets and fire extinguishers.
